The California Attorney General’s Office has announced felony charges against Kern County supervisor Zach Scrivner on Friday after the state took over an investigation into allegations that Crivner sexually assaulted a child.
“No one is beyond the law,” Atti said. General Rob Bonta said in a statement Friday that he had released the charges. “The California Department of Justice will continue to fight for the people of California and retain those responsible for the law.”
Following a “extensive investigation” by the state Department of Justice, Scrivner faces two counts of child abuse and two counts of assault weapons. The charges were filed in Kern County Superior Court. Scrivner was scheduled to be arrested at 3pm on Friday.
Bonta’s office previously said the Attorney General took over the case due to a “potential conflict of interest” involving the Kern County District Attorney’s Office. Atti, Karn County district. Cynthia Zimmer is Scrivner’s aunt.
Scrivner resigned from the county board of supervisors in August. In a letter to Chairman David Couch, Scrivner did not mention the allegations made against him. Instead, he said he was resigning for “significant health and medical reasons.”
Scrivner’s attorney Ha Sarah denied the allegations of sexual assault in comments to the media, saying there was evidence to refute the sheriff’s claims. Sarah could not be reached for comment Friday.
In April, Kern County Sheriff Donnie Youngblood told the news conference that Zimmer contacted the sheriff and that Scrivner was armed at his Tehachapi home and appeared to have “some sort of mentally ill episode.” He said.
Youngblood knows Scrivner had a physical altercation and says he was stabbed twice in the upper torso by one of his children over allegations that he attacked another. Scrivner’s four minor children were at home at the time, but his wife, who had previously filed for divorce, was not.
The detectives obtained a search warrant and ended up seizing 30 firearms, psychedelic mushrooms, electronic devices and possible evidence of sexual assault on the home, Youngblood said at a press conference.
According to the state complaint, Scrivner is facing two felony counts of illegal possession of a semi-automatic AK-47-style rifle and a Colt semi-automatic AR-15-style rifle.
The complaint provides little details about what happened on April 23rd. According to the state attorney general, Scrivner “incidentally took drugs and substances, changed drugs and substances, went to bed” with a child who inappropriately touched the child.
The state claimed Sribner faces a number of felony charges after firing out a firearm, during which the struggle with one of the children of the family continues.
Before resigning, Scrivner represented District 2. This covers approximately 3,660 square miles, including the City of California, Fraser Park, Taft and Tehachapi. The Board of Supervisors held elections in November to fill the vacant seats.
Kern County residents had requested that Scrivner resign before the charges were announced. County Commission members declined to comment on the investigation.
According to his district biographies, Scrivner has been the board of directors since 2010. Before that, he was elected to Bakersfield City Council. He also worked for former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy for four years.
