Sierra Madre neighborhoods are facing weekend cleanup after the season’s most powerful storm left some of the mud-covered Foothill community.
San Gabriel Valley City took a major blow to the storm this week, bringing occasional heavy rain and flash flooding on Thursday. The thick mud-coated street forced a closure after a muddy stream of water ran downhill and into residential areas.
The video shows 20 to 30 plastic sanitary bins carried by rivers of mud and debris. Several vehicles were clogged with mud all the way up to the top of the wheel well, which required removal by tow trucks.
The Etonfire, which began with a brutal Santa Ana storm on January 7th, stripped the hillsides of the vegetation area, increasing the risk of strong mud and debris flows.
“If this storm had happened six weeks ago, this wouldn’t have happened,” said resident Mary Forney. “It’s just natural.”
Flood warning issued Thursday covered Pasadena, Altadena, Sierra Madre, Arcadia and Monrovia. The evacuation warning was issued at San Gabriel Foot Hills near the Eton Fireburn area and affected thousands of residents.
The city of Sierra Madre issued a forced evacuation order Thursday morning affecting nearly 1,000 homes.
Road closures and restrictions are in effect on Saturday at the lower canyon. All Sturtevant Drive was closed to traffic.
