The average price of gas in California has skyrocketed over the last few weeks, flirting with the scary $5 mark.
According to the AAA, the average price for regular gas in California was $4.84 on Saturday. That number rose about 25 cents since last Saturday, and 44 cents from a month ago.
The month’s 44 cent rise comes as refineries begin to move towards summer blends of fuel, AAA said. Another cause is the daily full-time pairing with major refineries that are offline in Northern California.
Still, California’s February 15th average is about 19 cents higher than the 2024 average ($4.64).
Last month, the national average rose by around 8 cents.

Last year, the California Air Resources Commission approved measures to reduce fuel carbon strength as states try to move away from their dependence on fossil fuels. Carbohydrates at the time point noted that the move is likely to raise prices in the state.

Now, a combination of those and other factors makes Californians experience higher prices at pumps.
The average is differentiated across different metro areas. They are:

California currently has the highest average in the country, according to the AAA. This is the title the state usually competes with Hawaii.
