Defense Secretary Pete Hegses has formulated plans to cut 8% from each of the Pentagon budgets for the next five years, particularly in line with President Donald Trump’s priorities, to achieve peace through strength. He ordered the agency to do so, officials said.
Hegseth is seeking plans to identify offsets from the Biden administration’s 2026 budget.

Hegseth ordered the proposed cut to be made by Monday, according to the memo.
“The preparation time is over. We must act urgently to revive the warrior spirit, rebuild our troops, and reestablish deterrence,” wrote Heggs. “Our budget will fund the combat forces we need, halt unnecessary defence spending, reject excessive bureaucracy, and promote practical reforms including audit progress. .”

“The Department of Defense has conducted this review to ensure that it makes the most of the taxpayer dollars in a way that efficiently and effectively delivers President Trump’s defense priorities. “I’m doing that,” he said.
“The department will create a list of potential offsets that can be used to fund these priorities and refocus the department on the central mission of war deterrence and victory,” he adds.
