Officers arrested the man and returned a stolen dog named Tucker to the legitimate owner over the weekend, police said Wednesday.
Santa Ana Police said Tucker, a Chihuahua mix, was stolen from the owner’s front yard in the North Light Street area.
“Thanks to the prompt action of patrol officers during traffic stops, Tucker was found in the back seat of the car and returned to his legitimate owner safely,” the police department said on the X-Post.
Santa Ana PD attached a video of the arrest to the X-Post, showing officers carrying out traffic stops on suspects whose identity was not readily available.
“Do you remember when you asked if there was anything illegal in your car?” asked the officer while cuffed the man. “What is the name of that dog?”
The man replied, saying that it was his friend’s dog.
However, the officers quickly recognized the dog.
“Is that Tucker?” the officer detaining the suspect asked another officer.
“Is that dog’s name Tucker?” The officer then asked the suspect, who replied, “Yes.”
“A man with awe, that’s an unfortunate day for you,” the officer told the suspect.
The video then switched to body cam footage, and was shown by an officer gently approaching Tucker when he saw him being tucked into a basket blanket.
The officer took Tucker out of the suspect’s car, and subsequent images showed Tucker on his shirt and sat next to a police officer holding the rope.
According to the department, Tucker was safely returned to the owner.
“A happy ending for this puppy,” Santa Ana PD concluded.
