Taking Bonta by skipping California governor’s race to fight Trump

San Francisco – All of California may not have a more political launch pad than the Attorney General’s Office.

As the state’s top police officer and its leading consumer advocate, the Attorney General lives in the election sweet spot. Voters in California tend to be strict with crime and tend to be jealous of their civil protection.

Those who worked, including Jerry Brown and his father, Pat, jumped directly to the governor. Kamala Harris took the role as US Senator seat and ultimately as Vice President. (Part of why she was chosen by Joe Biden was Harris’s relationship with her late son Beau, who had overlapped for some time as Delaware Attorney General.)

Current office holder Rob Bonta appeared well placed for the California Governor’s 2026 bid.

Attorney General Bonta recently said via breakfast in San Francisco that “strong… normal days have meaning. And in an unusual time, you’re democracy, the rule of law, the constitution. It’s very important when there’s a president who threatens it.”

Bonta, the party of several lawsuits trying to curb Trump, said his fight against the fraudulent elephant administration was in some ways personal.

He spoke about his father’s involvement in the civil rights movement and his parents’ lives under the Philippine dictatorship. He mentioned the eldest son of two daughters who married a Brazilian woman and raised concerns whether same-sex marriage is legal in the United States.

But first, Bonta spoke about his decision to abandon the governor’s competition after giving the campaign long and careful thought.

He said he began weighing the contest shortly after winning the full term as Attorney General in November 2022 (Bonta was appointed Gov. Gavin Newsom in March 2021, and Xavier Becerra was appointed to the health of the company. He was appointed to fill the vacancy left when it became human service. Secretary to the Biden administration.)

The birds fly. Fish swimming. As Bonta said, the politician “will immediately look down on the next thing.”

Newsom was praised, and Bonta, a rare open seat race for the governor to take advantage of itself, suggested not considering running is a political malpractice. He conducted a poll. He discussed staffing and fundraising. He thought about what his message was and expanded the size of other and potential candidates.

Things changed when Harris lost the White House. And it’s not just because she might be a heavy favorite to take part in the governor’s race and win soon.

If Harris were in the White House, he said the state had “a great partner who loves California and we know what our concerns and needs are.” He said, “It would have been very appealing to be a governor working in partnership with a president who works for California’s success to address our issues.”

Instead, he becomes a dictator in the country, embracing the Grès of Whitney Size Mountain against California, and is hoping to establish himself as the first King Donald.

It was once clear [approach] As attorney general, Bonta said, “I wanted to stay.”

The waitress went back and forth. Bonta, who was trying to fast intermittently and avoid eating by noon, had stuck to black coffee.

He said there is a cyclical nature in his legal battle with Trump and his work in blocking the whimsical president’s unprecedented grip on power.

Bonta was born in her mother’s country, the Philippines, but her native Ventura County and her father Bonta were missionaries.

“They had to make a very important decision, perhaps the most important decision I’ve ever made in my life,” said Bonta, who arrived in California two months ago. “They ask themselves if they can raise me in the Philippines and assure them that they have something that is unnegotiable for them: freedom, democracy, human rights, civil rights, the rule of law, legitimate procedures and more. And their answer was no.”

(As a child of a US citizen, Bonta was automatically a US citizen, so there is no personal interest in his efforts to block Trump’s attempts to overturn his birthright citizenship.)

Bonta, who was first elected to the Alameda City Council before moving to the state legislature and appointed him as attorney general, said his political career was his father’s role as a voting sovereign organizer in the South, and his parents who help farmers in California. He said he was inspired by his work.

Interesting: “Demons later, I didn’t expect to take office and fight the rise of dictators in the country that came to escape from them,” Bonta said.

Two other issues go home.

Bonta’s daughter Reina is a professional soccer player who met her wife while playing together in Brazil. Two months after the proposal, they hurried to hold a ceremony in Alameda and hoped to ensure Trump would get married before he took office. “Who knows the future of marriage equality?” Bonta said.

He also suspects that his stepdaughter might be removed from the US someday.

Trump is willing to keep out people who were once part of a highly legitimate asylum program. Some have worked alongside the US military in other countries,” Bonta said. “It’s an attack on ‘other people’, but it’s defined…. It’s often defined as if you’re black or brown or not of European descent. ”

From breakfast, Bonta headed to the California State Building in San Francisco for a hearing on judicial appointees.

Apart from filling the Trump administration with lawsuits, there is a lot to keep Bonta busy on his normal workload. He also has a reelection campaign to run. There is likely a second maturity, but that is not guaranteed.

And he will not foreclose the governor’s future bid, leaving the possibility that he was supported by this rhetorical gateway open.

At the age of 52, Bonta has many opportunities before him. And in Trump, he has the perfect foil to fill in his political resume for now.
