President Donald Trump came to the idea from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on Wednesday to provide 20% of his savings directly to the American people.
Trump said 20% of his savings will be delivered to tax-paying households via personal checks to US citizens, with another 20% being used to pay off citizen debt.
“Because the numbers are incredible, we consider a new concept of giving American citizens 20% savings and 20% paying off their debts.
A former Twitter user, X, first proposed the idea of ”Doge Dividend” to Elon Musk earlier this week, offering to pay $5,000. The billionaire Tesla owner said he would “check with the president” about the plan.

The reporter asked about the proposal in person at a Wednesday night event in Florida.
“I love it,” Trump said. “A 20% dividend, so to speak, for money that saves by chasing waste, fraud, abuse, etc., all the other things happening. I think that’s a great idea.”

According to NBC News, Trump continued to suggest that dividends could serve as an incentive to report government waste on his own.

So far, Doge claims it has saved about $55 billion from cuts to the USAID, the Department of Education and the Consumer Financial Protection Agency. However, some of Doge’s cost-cutting efforts are exposed to legal challenges.

Doge is currently only expected to exist until July 4, 2026, after which the organization will be disbanded.
Trump has not made any clear what his administration will do with the remaining 60% of Doge’s savings if he proceeds with the plan.
