Defense Secretary Pete Hegses released a video on Thursday detailing the reduction and restructuring of government efficiency (DOGE) within the Pentagon.

On the day of filming, Hegses met with Doge and said they were beginning to review.

“They’re here and we’re welcoming them,” Hegses said. “They will obviously have broad access with all the protections regarding classification.”

He added that many Doge workers are veterans and that is a “good thing” they find flaws.

“They, like us, care about finding redundancy and identifying the last trace of Biden’s priorities,” Heggs said.

Doge’s Stop at the Department of Defense comes after reviews by the Department of Finance, Labor, Education and Health, and after reviews by the Consumer Financial Protection Agency, Personnel Management and Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The temporary organization has faced enormous scrutiny over the past few weeks, with some accusing President Donald Trump of giving too much power to department head Elon Musk.

Many lawsuits have also been filed to block access to Doge’s confidential information.

The Department of Defense has already cut 8%, or $50 billion, from former President Joe Biden’s budget.

“That’s not a cut,” Hegses said. “It’s reinvesting existing funds to build a capacity to protect you, the Americans.”

The budget will “refocus” on Trump’s priorities and will not eliminate major programs, he added.

The department is also reevaluating the probation workforce, a government-wide lawsuit ordered by the president.

“In conclusion, it is not simply the public interest to maintain individuals whose contributions are not mission-critical,” Heggs said. “We start with poor performers among probation employees because that’s common sense and you want the best and brightest.”

Doge has fired 3,600 probation health and welfare officers and Human Services employees, with 7,000 expected to be cut from the IRS during tax season.

It is unclear how many defense workers will lose their jobs.

There is also a job freeze as the Department of Defense reviews its needs.

“The only thing I care about since I took this position is that it’s done right by fighters, the troops,” Heggs said. “In short, we want the biggest and worst A-army on Earth, God’s green earth.”
