The man remains behind the bar Thursday after police said he carjacked, lured and assaulted a woman who agreed to ride in West Covina.
Police say he is an Uber driver but is not on the watch, but agreed to help a man who approached at a nearby gas station just before midnight on January 27th and asked for a ride. It’s even worse.
“I was offering him free to ride, and I was going to give him some hints I had before – that’s insane,” driver Kathry Scott said.
Surveillance video was captured the moment the man got up into the car and tried to put his bike in the trunk. While the woman is helping, the man enters the front seat and tries to escape.
“I didn’t need too much heavy because he was trying to try and run, so I wrapped myself around him, but a little wrapped,” Scott said.
Authorities say in an attempt to stop the carjacking, the woman was able to drive at high speed and jump on top of him as he crashed the car at a traffic light on Garvey and Azusa Avenue.
“Subjects left a vehicle on foot in Garvey. We received a 911 call from a Mercedes-Benz dealer that a subject matching the description was hidden in the property,” said West Covina Police Department and Stephen. Sgt. McLean said.
Todd Kazarin, general manager of Mercedes-Benz Dealers, said he saw an arrest being made on security cameras.
“We know what we saw on our property based on surveillance video. It looked like a man was sitting in our van and the police were approaching,” Kazarin said. “We saw the police take someone out. We had the impression that the security company had called them, but I thought she called them and our security company. Masu.”
Police have released the video. This shows that officers and K-9 units arrive at the dealer and are arrested soon.
“It’s very rare for these types of crime to happen, but it’s always good wherever you go around, wherever you go,” McLean said.
The woman was taken to a hospital where she was slightly injured.
NBC4 contacted Uber to comment on the incident but received no response.
The carjacker, identified by police as 28-year-old Fernando Olivo of Elmonte, is still in custody and faces charges of carjacking, tricking and assaulting with a deadly weapon. Olivo is scheduled to return to court in March.
