Children’s Hospital Lifts Restrictions on Hormonal Therapy for Trans Youth

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles said Friday it was relaxing recent restrictions on hormonal treatment for transgender youth and reversed the move that sparked weekly protests outside the hospital.

Earlier this month, the hospital suspended the initiation of hormone therapy for “gender-promoting care patients” under the age of 19 as hospital staff evaluated an executive order issued by President Trump.

In a statement Friday, CHLA said it has cleared its suspension after considering recent decisions by federal judges surrounding Trump’s executive order and recent decisions surrounding California Atty’s commitment. . General Rob Bonta “seek additional protection from CHLA and its patients.”

“CHLA has temporarily suspended the initiation of these treatments to ensure time is available to assess the potential impact of recent federal policy changes,” the hospital stated. I’ve said that.

The LA Hospital previously said it had suspended surgery to affirm the gender of minors before recent restrictions on hormone therapy. Hospital officials have not announced the resumption of surgical procedures that affirm the gender of young patients.

Trump’s executive order targeted the use of adolescent blockers, hormones and other medical procedures against transgender youth under the age of 19. Groups such as the California Family Council have supported the executive order, called for such care that is harmful to young people, and urged other hospitals to follow when CHLA restricts its use.

Hundreds of protesters have gathered outside the CHLA in recent weeks to condemn the decision to stop starting treatment for transgender youth. It said it was an unnecessary step that puts transgender youth at risk, contrary to the guidance of major healthcare providers.

“This should be a safe place for these kids,” said Juan Carlos Pérez, parent of a 18-year-old patient at CHLA. “It really felt like a coronavirus betrayal that these hospital administrations were surrendering to something not even legal.”

Bonta’s office warned LA Hospital that withholding gender-affirming care could violate state law. Last week, a federal judge put some of Trump’s executive orders on hold amid legal challenges from transgender youth and the families of Attorney Generals in Washington, Oregon and Minnesota.

CHLA officials told hospital staff last week they were assessing the impact of those court decisions, but one of them doesn’t include California and appears to only apply to three states. and the other warned that it only blocked certain sections of the executive order on the Commonwealth. Institutions withholding funds.

Trump’s order may include changes to federal rules to ensure young people are eligible to access Medicare or Medicaid funding, so that the head of the Department of Health and Human Services will take “all appropriate actions”; It instructs people to prevent maintenance care.

“As California’s largest pediatric safety net provider, more than 70% of patients insured through Medicaid, CHLA’s state and federal policies on the ability to provide care to patients,” Chla said in a statement Friday. The impact of this should be carefully considered.”

LGBTQ+ advocates said limiting gender-maintaining care is not necessary even before court decisions, noting that many executive orders rely on federal rules that have not yet occurred .

“If the system complies with these executive orders that are not law, it gives the presidential administration a signal that they can really do what they want,” said Maebe A. Girl, a former LGBTQ+ parliamentary candidate and spokesman. It states. They protested outside the CHLA.
