A Santa Ana prisoner who was attacked by his cellmate died at the hospital Friday, officials confirmed with KTLA.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has identified the inmate as 38-year-old Juan Vazquez Purido.
According to the OCSD, Anaheim police were arrested and booked at Santa Ana’s Intake Release Center on February 5 for a “drug-related crime.”
That same day, Prido was placed in the holding cell along with another inmate, 23-year-old Irving Joss Morales.
While Pulido and Morales were on the reservation loop at the intake release center and waiting for containment, Morales attacked Pulido and knocked him unconscious.
Details were limited, and it was not clear at first whether weapons were being used in the attack or whether Purid had been unconscious before the civil servants found him. KTLA contacted OCSD for details on the attack, but did not respond immediately.
When deputies discovered the unconscious within the cell, OCDS said they provided medical assistance before taking him to a local hospital before emergency services arrived.
The hospital placed Puride in a medically induced coma, officials said.
Pulido passed away 16 days later.
OCSD said Morales was initially charged with attempted murder.
“However, additional charges against Morales as a result of Purid’s death may be considered by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office,” the Sheriff’s Department said at its release.
KTLA asked OCSD if the initial charge of attempted murder came before the attack or for the attack, but did not immediately respond.
“The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will investigate deaths under supervision,” the department said. “The Orange County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a review of the death of his in-laws. No additional information will be made public at this time.”
