Newsom launches digital democratic tools focusing on wildfire victims

SACROMENTO – California Governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday announced a new digital democracy initiative to connect government officials directly with residents in the event of a disaster, allowing him to express concerns about issues affecting everyday life I’ll do that.

A web-based initiative called Engaged California lives on focus on supporting fatal wildfire victims in the Pacific Ocean, Pallisad and Altadena, who are struggling to recover. For example, comments shared via online forums could encourage government measures regarding insurance coverage, building standards, or efforts to request power lines buried underground.

In a written statement, Newsom described the pilot program as “modern City Hall – sharing perspectives, concerns and ideas directed at finding real solutions.”

“We are beginning this effort with more direct involvement of Californians in the response and recovery of LA Firestorm,” he added. “We’ll do it together as we restore, reconsider and rebuild Los Angeles.”

The Democratic administration has an ambitious plan for an effort that goes far beyond wildfires. The engaged California modelled on a Taiwanese program, which became an essential bridge between the public and the government at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Taiwanese government relies on it to combat online political disinformation.

Your email address is everything that Californians need to sign in to the state’s digital platform, and you need to share your ideas and see the outcome of their collective action. Using artificial intelligence, we will sift through comments and prioritize responses by state officials.

“My hope is that in this we will be able to see an opportunity to express our honest opinions in real time in California. Amy Tong, secretary to the California Department of Government Operations, said:

The digital initiative is a public-private partnership that includes almost 12 academic and nonprofit organizations. The software platform and other digital tools for the effort cost the state around $120,000, said agency spokesman Roy Kennedy.

The website allows Californians to see a collection of public comments stripped of personal information that may identify participating residents, Ton said. As a result, the results are made by analyzing by agency staff who recommend government responses.

California is engaged in California, which is designed to be more accessible to residents than traditional paths to affect government, including testimony before city council, writing letters, and email councillors. said Mariano Florintino Quellal, president of the Carnegie Fund for International Peace, one of the program’s partners. .

The platform not only partially bridges the divisions among people in participating communities, but also reveals ideas and insights that governments may not always get. You need to create a set of authentic insights for some of the California Supreme Court’s former justice. “The goal isn’t just to post what people submit, it’s to encourage conversation.”

This is not Newsom’s first foray into technology. As San Francisco supervisor and then mayor of San Francisco, Newsom experienced the tech boom of the 1990s and early 2000s, establishing strong political ties with industry leaders since Silicon Valley. His 2013 book, Citizenville: How To Town the Town Square Digital and Reinvent Government, explored how Tech Titans could better use data to make government decisions.

As governor, Newsom had the difficult task of maintaining his position as a pioneer in California’s technology while protecting children and society from the harms of social media, artificial intelligence and online disinformation. .

While attending an AI conference in San Francisco last year, Newsom spoke with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, the governor’s oldest child godfather, to help the government and technoloy companies. We discussed the philosophy of interaction.

“We want to maintain our control, we want to maintain our innovation,” Newsom said. “At the same time, you feel a deep sense of responsibility to address some of the more extreme concerns that many of us think have – even the largest and most powerful promoters of this technology, it lands It’s a difficult place.”
