(Nexstar) – Move over sparkling water and hard seltzer, you’ll find a new colorful and trendy drink that takes over the drink industry: prebiotic soda.
There are entire brands dedicated to prebiotic sodas, such as startups Poppi and Olipop, which were launched over the past decade but quickly gained attention as alternatives to traditional sodas. The market for prebiotic sodas is growing very much, and in fact, Coca-Cola has recently launched its own line under the Simply brand.
“We’ve found that consumers, particularly the health-focused Gen Z-ers and millennials, are really interested in juice and prebiotic sodas,” says Becca, CEO of Nutrition at Coca-Cola Company. Kerr said. “And since many brands in this category are new, they were trying to match names they know and trust in both quality and taste. This is something that interests prebiotic sodas, but still, This was especially true for those who didn’t make the leap. We knew. To bring new drinkers into the category, we had to balance innovation and trust in a perfect balance.”
Daylight saving time will soon begin. Is this the last time the clock will change?
But let’s back up a bit: What is Prebiotics?
What is Prebiotics?
To understand prebiotics, you need to meet probiotics, live microorganisms and fermented vegetables in foods such as yogurt, cheese, kefir and fermented vegetables. According to Harvard Health, regular consumption of probiotics can help ensure that your gut environment works properly.
Prebiotics that our bodies can’t break down act as food for probiotics and other “good gut bacteria” and continue to work. Fiber-rich foods (think fruits, vegetables, whole grains), potatoes, bananas and artichokes are known to be desirable residences for the probiotics within our system.
Egg prices are rising sharply – why don’t chicken costs rise too?
They usually use plant-based fiber inulin, according to Julia Zumpano, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic Center’s Human Nutrition Center. Inulin, which is also found in other fruits, vegetables and grains, is soluble in water. This means you don’t realize that it’s there.
Why are prebiotic sodas so popular?
Recently, attention has been increasingly focused on gut health, Zumpano told Nexstar via email.

For example, consider kombucha, a fermented drink that gained popularity in the late 2010s and was billed to be beneficial for digestion, weight loss and heart health. There were also countless (almost unproven) health trends passed on to Tiktok, like the “parasite cleansing” that gained traction last summer.
Compiled by consulting firm AlixPartners and released last year, data showed that in 2023, more than triple the number of prebiotic and probiotic drinks will be on sale, particularly in the US.
Is a prebiotic drink worth it?
This depends. They may serve as special treats and “innocent duls”, but they should not rely on you regularly for your gut health.
Inulin, which is usually used in prebiotic soda, is considered beneficial to our diet, but it is unclear how it is beneficial. In 2024, Poppi was sued by a consumer who argued that biotic sodas would not improve gut health as much as marketing suggested. The lawsuit argued that the amount of agave inulin fiber in the soda pre-biotic was insufficient. To enjoy the benefits of it, consumers must drink so many poppi sodas, so increased sugar consumption increases the benefits.
Zumpano recommends checking the sugar content of prebiotic drinks.
“These drinks may contain a lot of sugar that isn’t good for your overall health,” she explains, limiting intake and choosing prebiotic foods the most frequently I add that it is best.

Prebiotic soda is considered healthier than traditional soda. This can also be useful if you are trying to stop the consumption of soft drinks.
Fiber is important to our diet, but too often we also experience side effects. This includes bloating, diarrhea, flatulence and gas pain. If you want to add fiber to your diet, Zumpano is recommended to promote slowly. People who have experienced chronic digestive conditions like Crohn’s disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) are also recommended by Zumpano, recommended in a recent blog post.
