The Marines fighting the rocks worked together to reduce Mount Sribachi and boost the American flag. It was captured by military photographers and later became a lasting symbol of the Allied victory over Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan in World War II.

According to a report by the Department of Defense, Marines first invaded Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945 as part of the US Island Hopping Campaign, taking four days to win the summit of Suribachi.

“The intake of the 554-foot hill was important. It was important in that it kept fires from the Japanese who dug and had a major perspective on most of the island,” the DoD report said. I’ll read it.

The battle continued on the island until March 26th, resulting in the injury or death of approximately 27,000 Marines and seafarers.

The brutal battle also led to the deaths of 21,000 Japanese soldiers, who defended the island through a series of caves, tunnels and pillboxes.

However, the four-day photo of the battle remains its lasting image, rapidly spreading across the world, making it a powerful adoption and morale tool for the US government.

“This photo was at the heart of the War Bond poster that helped raise $26 billion in 1945,” the Pulitzer Prize Committee wrote on the image’s online account.

The identity of the male in the photo has been the subject of decades of debate, but the latest research suggests that the male is PFC from the left. Ira Hayes, PFC. Harold Schultz, Sergeant. Michael Storn, PFC. Franklin Thuley, PFC. Harold Keller and Cpl. Harlon Block.

Brock, Thule and Strang were later killed during their battle with Iwajima.

However, the image stands the test of time and is replicated of everything from postal stamps to a memorial just north of Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
