The Los Angeles County Regional Parks and Open Space District announced 13 beneficiaries on Tuesday.

The competitive grant program aims to “fill the fair gap and invest in eligible programs or capital projects that match those identified in the park.” According to the RSD website.

The grant is funded by Measure A, a 2016 voter-approved parcel tax.

RSD is a special district in LA County that collects property tax revenue and grants cities, nonprofits and other agencies to support parks, open spaces and recreation programs.

This year’s grant funds the creation and expansion of approximately 623 acres of new park land. Over 50% of that fund will be directed to communities with “high needs” to increase space.

The City of Los Angeles, Baldwin Park, Palmdale and the county Department of Parks and Recreation each received $2 million.

Carson, Santa Clarita, the Mountain Restoration Trust in Malibu, Arroyo and Foothills Conservancy in Altadena, and Coyoetre/Macheduarri in Elephant Hill each received more than $1 million.

Artesia and Covina, North East Trees, and the Los Angeles Neighborhood Trust for South La were also awarded smaller grants.

“Whether it’s hundreds of acres of open space or small neighbourhood parks, investments from local parks and open space districts provide direct service to residents in every part of the county,” said the LA County Board of Supervisors. Kathryn Berger, chairman of the group, said in a statement.

“With this funding, we are investing in the happiness of our communities, particularly those who have limited access to green spaces, high levels of pollution, and consequently, our well-being of communities facing health disparities,” Los Angeles said. County Superintendent Holly Mitchell added.

Previous measurement projects include Del Rey Lagoon, Sycamore Grove Park, and Woodbridge Park.

Authorities also announced special funding opportunities to support fire recovery and climate resilience efforts to support fire recovery in the near future.

The two fires burned a 37,469 acres of combine. The Palisade fire burned 23,448 acres, while the Eton Fire burned 14,021 acres.
