Hundreds of local students will travel back and forth between schools on new, state-of-the-art electric buses deployed this spring.
The Compton Unified School District held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, unveiling a new fleet of 25 electrical school buses and charging stations.
25 new buses were funded through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean School Bus Program. The district plans to purchase 25 more electric buses in the future.

“These new electric buses are an investment in our students’ future. We provide safe and clean transportation for them to pursue their dreams,” said CUSD Principal Darrin Broley.
Durham School Services, the district’s transportation provider, played a key role in the transition to electric vehicles, officials said.
The Highland Electric Fleet, which will help the organization move its existing fleet of vehicles to electricity, said the new Compton Unified bus is “cleaner, quieter, healthier transport for the community.” “It’s especially important in counties where one in 11 children have asthma,” said Brian Bachsera.
In preparation for the bus deployment, a practical training session for technicians was held in January to cover EV safety, charging stations and operations.
The new electric bus is expected to reduce emissions and offer quieter, greener transportation options for Compton students.
“These new buses not only provide a more sustainable and healthy Compton community, but also serve as models of innovation and social responsibility for Compton scholars.”
