Waymo’s autonomous driving capabilities were recently tested in downtown Los Angeles when Robotaxi was nearly destroyed by a pair of dangerous drivers in adjacent lanes.
In a video and caption shared with X, former Twitter, Waymo Ceo-CEO Dmitri Dolgov said “driving can be nerve-wracking at times,” but in this case, artificial intelligence prevented the collision.
The video shows Waymo vehicles in the central lane surrounded by other cars. When the light turns green, one vehicle uses what appears to be a bus lane to quickly pass another vehicle and hit the brakes.
To avoid a car that stopped before that, the other vehicle turns left, and the video shows the Waymo vehicle doing the same thing, avoiding contact with the other vehicle in the process.
Waymo waits for the other two vehicles to depart, and if the other two continue to drive irregularly they enter the turn lane.
Dolgov praised the technology that avoided serious crashes.
“It’s rewarding to see it [Waymo] Driver AI makes quick, real-time decisions in messy situations and brings riders to their destinations safely,” Dolgov added.
Waymo spokespersons are working to get more information about the incident and this story will be updated when these details are received.
