Kourtney Kardashian Barker joined the protesters on Thursday, continuing to express his opposition to a plan that would bring thousands of tons of ashes and debris to the Calabasas landfill in Agra Hills from the recent wildfires.
The plan involves bringing up to 5,000 tonnes of debris into landfills every day from recent wildfires, including Palisade fires.
Ash can contain lead, other heavy metals, and a variety of toxic compounds, and scientists say that any amount of lead exposure is potentially dangerous.
Since February 15th, protesters have been in the landfills and have called for change.
The founder of Poosh was not the only public figure present. Kendra Wilkinson, former girlfriend of Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy Magazine, shares a moment from the protest on Instagram.
“Stop toxic waste that is thrown away around our schools and residential areas!!!” the caption on Instagram said.
The Calabasas City Council recently wrote a letter to the LA County Board of Supervisors opposed the plan.
“The city council is forced to reflect the public’s sentiment that the urgency of the recovery phase and efforts to improve one disaster are laying the foundation for future public health and environmental catastrophes that will affect Calabasas residents,” the city leader wrote.
Despite voice opposition, the Board of Supervisors recently agreed to temporarily remove dumping restrictions at Calabasas landfills, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Landfills are usually restricted to waste only from parts of Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Agra Hills, Malibu, Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks and Los Angeles, and are part of the selected area.
A board vote will allow landfills to accept material from outside the area for six months, due to the potential extension.
County leaders say they understand public concerns, but noted that landfills face strict regulations on fire waste disposal, with little chance of toxic waste coming through the air.
