Riverside County Sheriff and Governor candidate Chad Bianco have said the recently introduced bill in the California Legislature “makes self-defense against criminals illegal.”
AB 1333 was introduced on February 21 by Assembly member Ricks Bar in Santa Monica.
According to the California Legislative Information Website, the bill requires that “eliminate certain circumstances in which murder can justify in order to defend residence or property.”
The explanation states, “The bill will make it even more clear about situations in which murder cannot be justified, including when a person uses more force than necessary to prevent danger.”
In a statement Tuesday, Sheriff Bianco said the bill would tie residents’ hands while submitting to criminals.

“The Sacramento Democrats have used and abused ordinary Californians who tied up law enforcement hands, suppressed criminals and tried to make criminals a real victim,” Bianco said. “Now they are actively trying to tie our residents together. They have had to frequently defend their re-released career criminals.”
Zbur responded to the backlash against the bill.
“AB 1333 was not intended to limit the rights of crime victims to protect themselves, their families or their homes. The goal is to prevent aspiring vigilantes like Kyle Rittenhouse from causing violence and claiming self-defense after the fact. We amend the bill to make this crystal clear.”
Rittenhouse fatally shot three men in Kenosha, Wisconsin in 2003 in a police protest altercation. He was charged with murder, but admitted to self-defense and was not guilty.
“I look forward to your testimony on this bill. See you in California,” he commented in response to a post by ZBUR.
Bianco announced his candidacy on February 17th.
