Vice President JD Vance shared that while he was “stomped” by Pope Francis’ criticism of the Trump administration’s immigration policy, he considers the crown prince “a person who is fundamentally concerned about Christian herds.”
While speaking at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. on Friday, Vance said he was a convert to Catholicism – he opposes Francis and the Catholic bishop on a particular stance, but he and his children pray for the Pope every day.
Francis, 88, currently suffers from pneumonia and infections in both lungs and is being treated at Gemeri Hospital in Rome.
Earlier this month, Francis issued a massive responsibilities in the Trump administration’s plan for the massive deportation of immigrants, emphasizing that strong removal of people due to immigrant status will “end up badly” by robbing their inherent dignity.

Francis wrote a letter to the bishop of the United States. There, it appeared to criticize Vance’s religious debate in defending deportation policies.
Nevertheless, Vance shared a message of unity between Catholics and Christians, saying, “For us, it is not good for Christians to constantly fight each other in all the controversies in the Church.”
“We need to unfold this a bit and try to make sure we do our best possible under the direction of our faith, under the direction of our spiritual leaders, but we don’t keep it to the standard of social media influencers because we’re not,” he added. “My goal is not to file a lawsuit when I’m right or when they’re wrong or vice versa. My goal is to clarify how I think about being a Christian in my public life when I have a religious leader who has a spiritual obligation to talk about the issues that day.”
The Vice President led the attendees in the Pope’s prayers.

“I believe that the Pope is fundamentally a person who cares about Christian flocks under his leadership, and that he cares about the spiritual direction of his faith,” Vance said. “Every day, me and my children have prayed for the Holy Father. We pray for his health, and we pray for his comfort in dealing with what he appears to be a rather serious health crisis.”
He shared important memories of the Pope’s message of courage and hope in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, which began just a few weeks after his daughter’s birth.
Vance is Catholic, the Trump administration will become “the greatest advocate for religious freedom.”
“I always remember the Holy Father. Whether he has overcome this illness – and I hope he will – I remember the Holy Father in March 2020. [and] It has meaning again today. ”

In conclusion, Vance said, “If the Holy Father can hear us, we hope we know that there are thousands of faithful Catholics in this room, and millions of faithful Catholics in this country, whom he prays for him as he overcomes a particular storm.”
