Dozens of dogs were loosened from an animal shelter in San Bernardino after someone broke into the facility armed with bolt cutters and smashed locks in multiple dog cottages, authorities said.
Police responded to a call about the break-in at the city’s Department of Animal Services early Wednesday morning, according to a news release.
Surveillance camera video shows people in hoodies and stepping on half a dozen dogs. Authorities have since detained anyone interested in unrelated accusations.
“We are shocked by the event,” said Christine Watson, director of animal services at San Bernardino. “Animal safety and well-being in our care are our number one priority, and this behavior put many of our dogs at risk.”
The intruders broke into the shelter around 3:30am and released about 25 dogs. Officers and shelter staff were able to recover almost everything.
Watson urged anyone with information about Louise’s whereabouts to contact Animal Services at (909) 998-4000.
“Her safety is our greatest concern and we hope that someone will recognize her and help us bring her back,” she said.
The four dogs were found in a trash can near the shelter. They have been investigated by the Animal Services Veterinary Team and are all in good condition and are expected to be available for adoption within a few days.
The shelter has over 300 dogs in care and are looking for employers, foster parents and donations.
“The community’s support when the words about the intrusion were revealed was overwhelming,” Watson said. “There are so many wonderful animals in the shelter, and we hope this will encourage local residents to visit our shelter.”
