The man is speaking after he and his colleagues rushed to help a 63-year-old woman who was violently assaulted by a naked man on Sawtel on Thursday.
General contractor Rick Dreyfuss said he and his crew were working at a construction site in the 2400 block of Barry Avenue near the I-10 highway when he heard the woman screaming for help.
“Part of you know, ‘Is this really going on now?” And part of you know, ‘We have to help her,'” explained Dreyfus.
Dreyfus told KTLA’s Angeli Kakade that when they got to her the naked man was stalked by a 63-year-old man on her stomach, on her back, trying to rape her.
The Los Angeles Police Department said officers answered a call reporting the attack at 12:40pm and arrested the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Ishmail Bangura.
Before the attack on KTLA, LAPD confirmed that Bangala ran out of a nearby apartment and attacked the 3-year-old in the face.
He then set the target in another apartment, broke into and began attacking the 63-year-old woman.
Police say she’s out and about to get out, and that’s when Dreyfus says he’s heard something he’ll never forget – she screams for help.
Dreyfus said the attack, along with many residents in the area, demonstrates growing concern over a nearby homeless camp.
“Many of these people have weapons [workers] Dreyfus spoke about the crew’s reaction. “This is what we’re dealing with and it’s happening more and more.”
Records show that in October a resolution was passed to eliminate people found sleeping under the I-10 highway, but the city is waiting for signs to be placed to enforce the new law.
Councillor Traci Park issued the following statement on Saturday regarding the violent attack:
“I have always made my expectations about LAPD clear. They must take critical action to eliminate dangerous and violent individuals from our city before any horrific incidents like this attack occur. Our residents deserve vigilance to maintain the safety and security of our communities.”
Regarding the 63-year-old victim whose name is not readily available, LAPD says she was taken to hospital, treated for minor injuries and allowed to return home that night, while the 3-year-old was treated on the scene.
