President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Saturday to make English the official US language
The order “Improved Access Services for People with Limited English Proficiency” rescinds an executive order issued by former President Bill Clinton in 2000. This has called for the recipients of federal agencies and federal funding to provide language assistance to English speakers.
However, Trump’s orders point out that it does not “request or direct” changes to services offered by any agency.
It is up to the agent’s manager to determine whether changes need to be made.

English is used as the national language found in all historical governing documents, but the United States did not have an official language.
“Nationally designated languages are at the heart of a unified, cohesive society, with the United States being reinforced by citizens who can freely vent ideas in one shared language,” Trump wrote in order.
The United States is one of only a few countries with no official language. Approximately 180 of the 195 countries around the world distinguish them.

Trump has been frank about designating English as the country’s language, particularly in 2024, as he criticised former President Joe Biden’s immigration policy.
“We have a language in our country. We don’t have one instructor in our entire country who can speak that language,” Trump said before the 2024 Conservative Political Action Conference.

The order says it aims to “promote unity” and “foster a shared American culture for all citizens” while ensuring consistency in government operations and creating a pathway to citizen engagement.
