The California Department of Transportation said Topanga Canyon Boulevard remains closed due to public safety concerns and remains closed while crews work to repair damage from the Pallisard fire and recent rain.
In a mid-February video released by Caltrans, State Road 27 between Pacific Coast Highway and Grand View Drive is completely covered in mud, rock and debris before excavation. According to a community update released last week, there is no estimated time for reopening. Caltrans did not outline alternative routes for drivers.
In addition to the impending repairs made after the fire and recent debris flowed, Caltrans found and destroyed a huge rock that was sitting unsteadily on a road near the power line.
Utility crews will need to reroute the main water lines under the road and the underground electrical lines. Before the rain, workers found over 20 locations along Topanga Canyon Boulevard, requiring replacement of debris flow barriers and dark verts, and safety measures such as Robofall cable mesh were required.
“We recognize the important role these corridors play in cleaning and restoration efforts for residents and the public. The decision to reopen the lanes must be a joint decision from all parties with certain plans in place and safety as the number one consideration,” Caltrans said.
The department said it will consider options for limited, escorted access to the area as repairs continue.
