Defense Secretary Pete Hegses has led the Department of Defense (DOD) civilian workforce, listing five things he accomplished after complying with Elon Musk’s Government Efficiency (DOGE) Productivity Email and telling him not to respond first.
On Sunday, Hegseth released a video message describing Shift.
“Our civilian patriots who are dedicated to protecting this country that works for the Department of Defense are important to our national security,” Heggs said. “As we work to focus on DOD’s core warfighting missions under President Trump’s leadership, we recognize that we cannot achieve that mission without the strong and important contributions of the private workforce.”
Musk, who leads Doge, shares a video of Hegseth on X, writing, “@secdef hegseth!” He also included salute emojis and American flag emojis.

Hegseth signed a memorandum of understanding with all DOD private employees on Friday.

Hegseth told employees to reply to emails within 48 hours and add a supervisor as recipient, including the results.
He said in the video that responses will be collected within the department to meet the requirements sent by the Department of Human Resources (OPM).
OPM emailed the same five bullets last weekend, but DoD’s HR and ready office told the private workforce to ignore requests.

DOD is taking a different approach to requests this week in collaboration with OPM to get better guidance on what is expected.
“The Department of Defense initially suspended this directive … but now it requires that all DOD civilian employees submit five bullets on last week’s results,” Hegses said in the memorandum.

He said employees’ Monday emails should be answered by DOD employees, but the response should not include sensitive or classified information.
Hegseth also said that non-compliance could lead to further reviews.
