As President Trump prepares to give his first speech to a Congressional joint session since taking office in January, here are some of the wildest moments from a joint speech from past presidents.

West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a later independent Democrat, came up with word of mouth on social media after standing when President Trump entered the room, praising some of Trump’s policy proposals when other Democrats sat down.
“That’s how I grew up in West Virginia. We respect him,” Manchin said of Trump’s first Union speech. “There’s still some politeness. There should be some politeness in this place.”

President Biden blows up GOP lawmakers in 2023, urging jeers from Republicans in the crowd
“Some of my Republican friends want to take the economy hostage – I’ll get it – unless I agree with their economic plans,” Biden told Congress.
“Instead of making the wealthy pay a fair share, Republicans and some Republicans want Medicare and Social Security to set the sundown,” Biden continued.
“I’m not saying it’s the majority,” Biden continued.
“Anyone who doubts that, contact my office. I’ll give you a copy – I’ll give you a copy of the proposal,” Biden continued to scream louder and louder from the crowd. “That means Congress won’t vote – I’m happy to see – No, I tell you, I enjoy conversion.”
Biden’s speech continued to deviate from that as Republican anger interrupted him on multiple occasions.
Reagan surprises the crowd with the first approval of the audience’s guests

While it has become common in recent years that audience guests are recognized in the president’s speeches to congressional joint sessions, President Ronald Reagan’s speech in 1982 was the first time that practices have been unfolded.
Reagan’s speech comes weeks after Florida flight crashed into Washington’s 14th Avenue Bridge shortly after taking off in an accident that killed 78 people.
The three survived the crash thanks to civilians on the ground who rushed to their aid, including Assembly Budget Office assistant Renee Skutnik.
Reagan praised Skutnik in his speech, making people in the crowd a more general theme in the coming years.
“Just two weeks ago, in the midst of a horrifying tragedy over Potomac, we once again saw the spirit of American heroism at its best. “And we saw the heroism of one of the young government officials, Rennie Skutnik, who saw a woman lose her grip on a helicopter line and jumped into the water and dragged her safely.”
Boebert heckles Biden over Afghanistan’s withdrawal during his 2022 speech

“You put them in, 13 of them,” shouted to Biden when he spoke about Afghan veterans who ended up in Cass after being exposed to toxic burn pits. Boebert was referring to 13 U.S. Service members who were killed during Biden’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
Boebert was dressed as “drill baby drills” against Biden’s energy policy.
At another point, Boebert and Greene began to chant “build a wall” when Biden was talking about immigration.

Rep. Joe Wilson screams, “You lie!” President Obama
One of the most memorable explosions from Union speeches came in 2009 when South Carolina GOP Rep. Joe Wilson paused President Obama’s speech.
“Some people argue that our reform efforts will ensure illegal immigration,” Obama said, speaking of his controversial Obamacare plan. “This is wrong too. The reforms I am proposing are not applicable to people here illegally.”
“You lie!” Wilson cried out from the Republican side of the Chamber of Commerce, screaming from the rest of the audience.
Wilson later apologized to Obama’s Chief of Staff, Rahm Emmanuel.
“Tonight, hearing the president’s comments on the reporting of illegal immigration in the Health Care Bill, I put my feelings into my best,” Wilson said in writing. “I disagree with the President’s statement, but my comments were inappropriate and disappointing. I extend my sincere apology to the President for this lack of politeness.”
Speaker Pelosi tears Trump’s 2020 speech
Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi cemented herself with Union notoriety when she set off a social media fire and in February 2020 she stood up and destroyed Trump’s speech after he was over.
When Fox News asked Pelosi why she did it, she replied, “Because it was polite considering the alternative.” She said, “I tore it apart. I was trying to find one page that had the truth in it. I couldn’t.”

Pelosi’s explosion came shortly after Trump’s first blast each trial, which ended with a Senate acquittal the day after his speech.
