A DUI driver who intentionally hit and killed a 13-year-old girl while walking along the Pacific Coast Highway in 2010 could soon be released from prison.
The victim’s parents found on Friday that Governor Newsom had refused their appeal for the early release of his daughter’s murderer, 41-year-old Sina Cankkhania.
Now, Ellen and Michelle Shane are speaking out. He seeks justice for her late daughter, Emily Shane.
“She had no average bones in her body,” Eren told KTLA’s Angeli Kakade on Monday, recalling her daughter’s memories. “In my opinion, minimizing it to a minimum for such a heinous crime is really not justice.”
After a two-year trial, the Kankanian was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the crash, but the couple said they were eligible for parole after just 12 years old.
Since then, the family has focused on keeping Emily’s memories alive through the Emily Shane Foundation, and they are also trying to keep the man who took her life behind the bar.
“He killed our daughter. “Driving the way he made it like a maniac 17 miles to kill a young child.”
Emily’s father, Michelle, said she wasn’t sure the Cancanians were ready to be released.
“He’ll fall off the rails again and I hope he won’t kill the child,” Michelle said.
Governor Newsom’s Office Show documents were paroled in 2023.
It was a comeback in the second half of 2023, but was approved in October 2024. That means his release could be months away.
The Shanes told KTLA that Emily’s memories will continue to live through work with the Foundation, and that if the Cancanians are released they will forget him.
