Southern California’s favorite bald eagle couple Jackie and Shadow have a new eagle.
Live cameras from Friends of Big Bear Valley (FBBV) filmed one of the couple’s three eggs that they hatched late Monday night.
“Before midnight, the first chick was able to see its wings and head and was out after a while!” FBBV posted on Facebook a while later. “Jackie rolled the egg and pushed it back a bit, but the first touchdown was official hatch time: 23:26, come time.”
Early on Monday, as I approached hatching, I saw a crack in the second egg.

Hatching is a long process, and if the chick is first seen, it can take more than a day for the chick to fully emerge from the shell.

The couple’s third egg shows no signs of hatching yet, but FBBV says the egg is on its 34th day and is not worried yet. “Normal hatching is 35-42 days so it’s still enough time to wait and see what happens.”
Monday also marked the third birthday of “Spirit,” Jackie and Shadow’s final Eaglet.
