Senator Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich. blown up President Donald Trump’s foreign policy agenda on Tuesday after he allegedly claimed that if the president became president in the 1980s he lost the Cold War.
Slotkin’s remarks came after Trump addressed a joint session in Congress on Tuesday in a speech similar to that of the Union’s annual states, declaring that “America is back,” and that “the dreams of America are surged.”
“We all want to end the war in Ukraine, but Reagan knew that true strength required America to combine the power of our military and economy with moral clarity,” said Slotkin, who was tapped to provide an official Democratic response to Trump’s speech. “As a child of the Cold War, I’m grateful that it was Reagan and not Trump in the 1980s. Trump would have lost the Cold War to us.”

Slotkin focused on Trump’s tense Friday exchange with Trump’s Voldeemy Zelensky. There, Trump and Vice President JD Vance sparred with Zelensky on whether diplomacy was the best path to bringing peace to an end the conflict.
Trump and Vance said Zelensky wasn’t grateful to the United States, and that the exchange halted peace talks to end the war in Ukraine and suspend the peace talks to pause the rare earth mineral trade between Washington and Kiev.
However, in a speech to Congress on Tuesday, Trump revealed that Ukraine is ready to resume peace talks and that it is ready to sign a mineral agreement that will allow the US access to Ukrainian minerals in exchange for US support.
Trump touts that he is trying to achieve peace through strength, a term coined by former President Ronald Reagan, but Reagan must be “rolling in his grave” following the “scene” between Trump and Zelenkey in his oval office.
Slotkin, a former CIA analyst who worked for the Pentagon and White House in both George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations, also attacked the administration’s efforts to defeat the federal workforce.
“Would you do some research to find a cure for cancer just to protect our nuclear weapons and to ensure that planes don’t crash, and to find a cure for cancer just to rehire them in two days? The American CEO couldn’t do that without being fired immediately,” Slotkin said.

Senator Elissa Slotkin previously served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives before becoming a senator in 2025.
The Trump administration launched a plan for a “massive cut” federal government-wide federal government in February and sent a memo dictating that a reorganization plan be created by mid-March.
Slotkin showed that Republicans and Democrats should cooperate with immigrants after his administration touted Tuesday that it “started the most drastic border and immigration crackdown in American history.”
“Every country deserves to know who and what are crossing the border,” Slotkin said. “All Democrats and Republicans should be for that.”

On Tuesday, Trump said he had sent detailed funding requests to Congress that set out how to eliminate the threat and carry out “the largest deportation operation in American history,” urging Mike Johnson and Senator John Tune.
Slotkin also encouraged US citizens to remain involved and hold elected officials accountable.
“I will hold elected officials, including myself, accountable,” Slotkin said. “Look at how they vote. I’ll go to City Hall and demand that they take action.”
