Two former members of the Cal State Long Beach Athletics division are accused of stealing thousands of taxpayer dollars from the university by submitting false timesheets and splitting profits, authorities said.
Oscar Perez Almanza, 38, and Hender Noe Maxwell, 38, were respectively charged with counting one felony conspiracy to commit a massive theft and a felony of grand larceny. Atty. Nathan Hochman announced Monday. They both pleaded not guilty.
The pair was accused of implementing a payroll fraud scheme in 2022, when Armanza was working as a field supervisor in the athletics club, and Maxwell left his position as a ground worker. Prosecutors say Maxwell submitted false timesheets and charged hundreds of hours of work to the university. Almanza approved Maxwell even if he knew that he was no longer employed in the school.
The pair allegedly stole $36,560 from the university through the scheme and split their profits.
“I am keenly awakened by the brave criminal act allegedly committed by California State University employees, Long Beach employees. “Stolen from California’s respected public university system steals from taxpayers and thousands of students who rely on the university for affordable tuition fees and education and career opportunities.”
DUO is facing a growing accusation against allegations that the crime demonstrated planning, refinement, professionalism and theft of large monetary value, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
If convicted of being indicted, they each face up to three years in the county jail.
Armanda and Maxwell were arrested Monday and released on the condition that they waive their passports. They returned to court on April 14th. The incident was investigated by the CSULB Police Station.
“We would like to thank the University Police Department’s Office for its initial investigation and pursuing this issue,” Jim Millbury, director of news media services in Long Beach, California, told The Times.
