“Everybody Loves the Sunshine has passed away. He was 84 years old,” said Roy Ayers, a native of Los Angeles.
“The Godfather of Neo Soul” passed away in New York City on March 4th following a “long illness.” His family said in a statement on Facebook Wednesday.

“He lived for 84 years and will be seriously overlooked,” the statement said. “His family asks you that you respect their privacy at this point. A celebration of Roy’s life will be coming closer.”
The vibraphone player, composer and record producer began his career as a post-bop jazz artist, releasing numerous albums for Atlantic Records. He then joined Polydor Records and helped out with Pioneer Jazz Funk in the 70s.

He is also known for hits like “Lifeline” and “Love to Love Stranger.”
However, his legacy with “Everybody Loves the Sunshine” lives on with a variety of rappers sampling hit songs such as “Book of” by Common’s Life of Life, “My Life” by Mary J. Blige, and “Lost Souls” by Not by Nature’s “Sunshine” 2pac.
Ayers was survived by his wife, Algerie, three children and granddaughter.
