A winter storm arrived in Southern California on Thursday, causing mountain communities to crash into heavy snow, creating dangerous driving conditions.

Travelers passing through San Bernardino County and Grapevine are advised to take great care as limited visibility as heavy rain, snow and heavy winds affect the area.

The California Highway Patrol issued a snow advisory for Taejeon Pass on the 5th Expressway. CHP reported several crashes in both the north and south lanes. All drivers will be asked to follow the CHP escorts to safely pass through the area on Thursday night.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for the mountain communities of San Bernardino County, including Big Bear, Lightwood, Running Springs, Lake Arrowhead and Crestline.

Snow levels are expected to drop as low as 3,000 feet by early Friday morning, but strong winds and slippery road conditions will continue.

“It’s still fresh, but it’s extremely dangerous,” said Miguel Delgadiro, a truck driver driving through Grapevine.

Despite the difficult driving conditions, locals were pleased to see the snow, and many visitors climbed the mountains to enjoy fresh flour on the slopes.

“Today was a great day,” said Juan Rodriguez, a snowboarder at Mount High in Lightwood. “We saw the weather. It rained yesterday. We got some fresh snow and I was like, ‘Man, I can’t miss this opportunity!” ”

“The winter is late,” said Greg Tirheimer Jr., mechanic/groomer at Snowdrift Snow Tubing Park. “How exciting is it that finally a lot of snow falls and people can come out here? It’s really exciting. We’ve been waiting for this all year.”

Hazardous driving conditions can affect your commute on Friday mornings. Those who have to travel to areas affected by snow are advised to store additional flashlights, food and water in their vehicles in emergencies.

“The CHP Fort Tehon Unit is escorting/pacing due to heavy snow clogging the road,” CHP said Thursday night. “Follow behind the patrol units and traffic at a safe distance. Do not try to work through traffic as this could lead to crashes and further delays.”

Residents across Southland are expected to take a break from winter weather this weekend.
