Big Bear celebrity Bald Eagles Jackie and Shadow broke through the headlines this week after welcoming three eagles into the nest.
After high expectations, the couple welcomed their first chick late Monday, their second chick on Tuesday and their third chick on Thursday.
The newly founded family is now facing their first major challenge: intense winter weather.
The storm in early March was produced near a white environment, prompting a warning of winter storms throughout the Socal Mountain Communities. As of Friday afternoon, Big Bear had received 11-19 inches of snow over the past seven days.
It fell to 23 degrees on Friday morning.
A live stream of the nest, provided by friends of the Big Bear Valley’s environmental nonprofit, showed Jackie covering her newborn as ice and snow beat the feathers on Thursday night and Friday morning.
In an interview with NBCLA, Sandy Steers, FOBBV Executive Director, said:
“All of these layers keep your body temperature at 105 degrees… The wings are slightly opened to sit on the chick, and they’re warm and dry without any problems.”
Cold weather is not an issue for birds after hatching, but it seems that when Jackie’s egg failed to hatch, it was likely that the heartbreak last year played a role.
“Last year, especially they have so much snow and we have pores in our eggs and we need to breathe, so we are at high altitudes.
Big Bear’s famous eagle appears to have welcomed the eagle into the world after one of the eggs became hatch. The video aired on NBC4 News on Monday, March 3, 2025 at 11pm.
Stairs says the tough conditions are just part of being an Eglet.
“They don’t seem to notice after they have waterproof feathers. They don’t really care about the weather in any way,” she said.
These feathers are expected to begin development in 6-7 weeks.
Simply hatching is not a sign that will allow the bird to mature. According to the steers, current statistics show that only 50% to 60% of chicks are out of the nest.
She also added that she is excited about all the attention the bird is getting.
“Everyone is happy with Jackie and Shadow and we’re thrilled to be following them because they’re learning to connect with nature and nature. That’s what we’re all about.”
The two Eagle parents spend around 10-14 weeks spending time with their little ones before leaving the nest. For the Eagles to exist for themselves, they must be fully grown and able to catch their prey themselves.
Snowfall is expected to resume on Monday night.
