The USDA has cancelled a grant worth $600,000 for research into menstrual cycles in transgender men, Secretary Brook Rollins said Friday.
According to the USaspending.gov database, the Southern University Agriculture and Mechanical College of Louisiana were grant recipients.
“The first occurrence of menstruation occurs at about 12 years old and ends with menopause at about 51 years old,” the grant description reads aloud. “Women have a menstrual cycle every month for about 40 years of their lives, and average around 450 periods over their lifetime.”
The federal agency will significantly cut millions of contracts, including $230,000 for “Brazilian Forests and Gender Consultants.”

“It is also important to recognize that people with transgender male and male gender identities, intersex, non-binary people can also menstruate,” the explanation adds. “About 26% of the world’s population is menstruated.”
This study aims to “address growing concerns” related to menstruation, including the potential use of natural fibers such as hemp in feminine hygiene products.

The grant was scheduled to be ongoing until April 2027.
This study was first discovered by the Conservative Nonprofit Principles Project. It identified more than 340 federal grants issued to various institutions, including universities and hospitals, during the Biden administration, and won federal funds of more than $128 million in total.
