The man died after four other men attempted to steal a chain in South Los Angeles early Saturday morning, police say.
According to a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department, the attempted robbery occurred around 3:15am near Florence and west streets in the Harvard Park area.
“Four black men approached the victim on foot and tried to take his chain,” the spokesman said. “The victim refused, and one suspect produced a gun and fired multiple rounds.”
The victim, still unidentified, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared deceased.
The suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction. A LAPD spokesperson said that although no explanations were available immediately, the incident was confirmed to be not related to the gang.
Videos from the scene show the presence of police outside Burger Palace, at the intersection of Florence and the western part of the country, but it was not confirmed whether a shooting took place there.
