One person died and firefighters were seriously injured in a firefighter Saturday night in a Los Angeles home.
The LA City Fire Department said crews responded to reports of a structural fire in the Hyde Park area at 6:55pm.
Upon reaching the scene, firefighters encountered a major fire in two rooms in a single-storey detached house in the 7,000 block of S 4th Avenue.
“The crew carried out an offensive internal fire attack while conducting a thorough search of the house after receiving reports of people probably trapped inside,” Lafd said in a statement.
Firefighters discovered a man estimated to be around 50 years old.
Lafd said crews and paramedics began life-saving procedures while transporting seriously injured patients to the trauma center.
“Unfortunately, despite their best efforts and staff work in the emergency room, patients did not survive,” the department said.
It was not immediately known whether the victim tried to evacuate. Officials had not disclosed their identity as of Sunday afternoon.
LAFD said it took 42 firefighters about 22 minutes to defeat the fire.
“A 33-year-old male LAFD firefighter was also taken to hospital with serious but lifeless injuries,” the firefighter added.
The injured firefighter status was not included in the fire department’s initial release.
The department said that for each protocol, the LAFD’s Arson and Counterterrorism Section has responded and is actively investigating the cause of the fire.
