Austin (KXAN) – Southwest Airlines will no longer allow bags to fly freely. The airline announced Tuesday that it will begin billing customers to check their packages in May.
The airline will continue to offer two free check bags for quick rewards, as well as passengers flying A-List priority members and business-selection fares. A-list members are allowed to receive a free check bag, but one check bag receives a quick reward credit card member credit.
All other customers who do not qualify for the free bag option will be billed starting May 28th. The airline did not specify how much it would cost to check the bag.

Southwest will also begin offering basic fares with the lowest priced tickets before offering allotted seating and extra legroom options. The airline previously announced that it will begin allocating seats to passengers on flights in the first half of 2026.
The changes “create new opportunities to reach customers who are better than anything else,” the airline said in a press release Tuesday.
“There is a great opportunity to meet the needs of our current and future customers, attract new customer segments that are not competing today, and return to the level of profitability that both shareholders expect,” Southwest President and CEO Bob Jordan said in a press release.
