Los Angeles authorities said Tuesday that the man was paralyzed in coma after the driver slammed into a carmax dealer in Inglewood.
The victim suffered a brain injury and was paralyzed after 25-year-old Andrew Arroyo crashed into a business on Lasienega Boulevard at 2pm on Saturday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in a complaint.
The district attorney filed several charges against Arroyo, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism, the complaint stated.
Of the 10 people affected by the case, six of them suffered serious injuries, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
A Carmax spokesperson said only one of the injured people Tuesday was an employee, not two previously reported.
The company also told NBC Los Angeles that before the crash, Arroyo had entered the dealership, looked at stock and received an offer in the car before the mood changed.
“The employee shares his observation that his behavior suddenly became unstable, but he did not recognize it as related to the offer of assessment,” a Carmax spokesman said.
Arroyo is said to have caused a hit and run and injured others, but it is not clear whether the incident occurred before or after Carmax’s crash.
The suspect was also armed with weapons and tried to use it during Saturday’s ordeal, the District Attorney’s Office said.
The complaint also said Arroyo had demonstrated “highly cruelty, maliciousness and coldness” through a case with the district attorney’s office, which it alleges, poses “a serious danger to society.”
If convicted, Arroyo could face life in prison.
The driver was on probation at the time of his arrest after reducing plea bargains after the DUI. It was not immediately clear why he was given a plea agreement.
