Drivers and car owners should be keeping an eye on thieves who may target vehicles with “key cloners” that use electronic devices to replicate key fobs, Burbank officials said Tuesday.
Burbank police said more criminals are breaking into cars with keyless ignition technology by scanning key FOB signals and creating cloned keys.
In some cases, the burglar warned that he could connect to the car’s system and program a new FOB.
“Thieves are using aftermarket devices the size of a mobile phone or tablet to remotely scan key FOB signals and quickly create cloned keys,” the department said in a statement.
Police urged residents to take precautions such as parking in safe areas, use motion sensing lights and security cameras, store key fobs in signal blocking pouches, and install GPS tracking devices such as air tags and tiles.
Police also recommend checking with the dealer for possible security software updates.
