The man accused of killing and shooting an Inglewood man who interrupted theft, attempting to stolen a catalytic converter from a parked car, is set to be arrested.
Saravia Sanchez, 31, is scheduled to face a judge on March 24th in connection with the fatal shooting of Juan Sanchez. The victim heard the noise early Tuesday and was heading to work when he witnessed the theft of a catalytic converter at his neighbor’s residence, a family representative told NBCLA.
The victim was shot in the upper body around 3:30am in the 1000 block of North Chester Avenue. He died in the hospital, police said.
“You guys need to stop it. This is all for pieces of metal, hundreds of dollars. This is very devastating,” the victim’s sister Susana Sanchez said last week.
Sanchez was her husband, father and new grandfather, the family said. They also stated that he had just received a promotion for work and wanted to arrive earlier that day.
Catalytic converters are popular with thieves as they are rich in precious metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium, making them extremely valuable when resold. Catalytic converter thefts are not uncommon, but Englewood Police Captain Neil Cochrane told NBCLA last week that it has been several years since the area was fatal.
“I don’t know what’s behind it, why people are shooting people dead when they’re stealing, but our warning to the public isn’t just that you think they’re not worth it,” Cochran said.
