USC and two other universities in Los Angeles and Orange Counties are one of 60 universities that the U.S. Department of Education’s Civil Rights Office of Potential Enforcement Action on Civil Rights if they do not protect Jewish students on campus.

Pomona College and Santa Monica College have received letters informing us of the need to fulfill their obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. This prohibits institutions receiving federal funds from discriminating based on race, color and national origin.

The country of origin includes Jewish ancestors. “The department is extremely disappointed that Jewish students studying on elite US campuses continue to fear safety amid a ruthless anti-Semitic eruption that has significantly disrupt life on campus for over a year. University leaders need to do better,” Education Secretary Linda McMahon said in a statement.

“U.S. universities and universities benefit from the enormous public investment funded by US taxpayers. That support is a privilege and conditional on strict compliance with the federal anti-discrimination laws.”

Santa Monica College issued a statement to the City News Service on Monday night that the U.S. Department of Education has launched three investigations into anti-Semitism allegations at Santa Monica College. The university responded to case number 09-24-2053 in a supplemental response on January 8, 2024. To case number 09-24-2248 on July 8, 2024. To case number 09-24-2438 on November 18, 2024.

“The university’s responses have outlined in detail the university’s full compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. None of these investigations have been determined by the Civil Rights Office.

“Santa Monica College remains committed to maintaining a culture of inclusiveness where open dialogue and respectful exchange of ideas take place.

Through professional development, mental and emotional health support, and other measures, the university tried to build a bridge to ensure that students and colleagues were aware of their rights.

“The SMC is opposed to anti-Semitism, just as universities oppose all forms of discrimination and hatred.”

Santa Monica College confirmed it received the letter Monday night.

There was no immediate response to emails sent for comment after the customary opening hours were closed at USC, Chapman University and Pomona University.

USC is one of 10 universities notified by the Department of Justice on February 28th, and was informed that the federal task force will be visiting to fight anti-Semitism following allegations that “a potential violation of federal law could not protect Jewish students and faculty from illegal discrimination.”

USC said on February 28th that it has taken strong action to protect all students, including members of our Jewish community, publicly and explicitly, from all forms of public and explicitly condemning anti-Semitism and protecting all students, including members of our Jewish community from illegal discrimination of all kinds. USC is proud to register one of the nation’s largest Jewish student organizations. We look forward to talking to the Department of Justice about everything we have done to create a welcoming and non-discriminatory campus environment for all members of our community.”
