President Donald Trump remains optimistic that the US will acquire Greenland despite saying he has no interest in Greenland becoming a part of the US
Trump’s comments coincided with a visit from NATO executive director Mark Latte, who said he didn’t want to “drug NATO” into negotiations about the United States, which has acquired Danish territory.
“I think that’s going to happen,” Trump told reporters Thursday. “And I wasn’t just thinking about it, but I’m sitting with a guy who could become a very instrument. Mark, we need it for security as well as international international security.”
Latte said he didn’t want to weigh the issue. However, he agreed to Trump that Chinese and Russians are operating on transportation routes near Greenland, and emphasized that Arctic countries must work with the US to maintain the region’s security.
“But when you’re in the North and the Arctic, you’re totally right,” Latte said. “Now, the Chinese are using these routes.”

Trump has been debating Greenland, Canada and Panama for months. And regularly calls Canada the 51st state of the United States. Additionally, in a joint speech to Congress on March 4, Trump argued that the US would acquire Greenland for domestic and international security.
“And I have a message to the incredible people in Greenland tonight,” Trump said. “We strongly support your right to determine your own future. If you choose, we will welcome you into the United States.”
“In any case, we’re going to get it,” Trump said. “We will keep you safe, make you rich and together we will bring Greenland to new heights.”
Greenland is rich in natural resources, including oil and natural gas, and both Russia and China have strengthened its presence in the region in recent years. For example, the US Navy announced its “Blue Arctic” strategy in 2021, warning that Russia is reopening old bases in the region, and as a result urged marine services to operate more proactively.

Trump discussed the possibility of expanding American territory for months, saying in a December 2024 post on True Society, “The United States feels that Greenland possession and control is absolutely necessary.”

Meanwhile, the leader of Greenland, a Danish territory, pushed Trump’s remarks back to lawmakers in Trump’s parliament.
“We don’t want to be Americans, we’re Kalalit (Greenlanders),” Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede said in a March 5 post translated by Reuters. “Americans and their leaders have to understand that.”
