Torrance refineries in Torrance have lost steam and some units have closed or slowed, officials said.
The incident occurred at 3:13am on Thursday. The refinery notified the Torrance Fire Station to “loss of steam.”
“The Torrance Refinery is assessing the impact and is actively creating repair plans,” the fire department said in the announcement.
Officials warn people who live or work in the Torrance area may see black smoke coming from the refinery. It may smell, but the company said there are no health concerns.
Neighbors don’t need any action right now, but the fire department encourages people to stay up to date through TorranceAlerts.
Steam losses at oil refineries can occur when the steam tap is malfunctioning. Heavy rain can also contribute to steam losses, including reducing system pressure and power.
No injuries have been reported.
