Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) says he will vote to keep the government open, warning that the closure will have worse outcomes for Americans and only empower President Trump and Elon Musk.
“I think it’s my job to make the best choice for the country to minimize harm to Americans. So I’ll vote to keep the government open and not close it,” Schumer said Thursday while speaking on the Senate floor.

Democrats have criticized Republicans for their hesitation to pass government funding laws, but their own parties are now on the brink of allowing the federal government to close.
On Wednesday, Schumer said his party opposed the spending bill that Republicans drafted and passed, as the midnight deadline on Friday is looming for Congress to take action to avoid government shutdowns.
Schumer called for a one-month spending bill to keep the government open until April 11th so Democrats can better negotiate the deal. The ongoing resolution that passed the House on Tuesday in a nearly party-based vote of 217-213 will leave the government open for the next six months for the remaining years of the fiscal year ending September 30th.
