President Donald Trump paid tribute to the heroic dog “defenses our citizens and our hometowns” on Thursday.
National K-9 Veterans Day celebrates “Dog Courage” and the Dog Courage of the Army and Police on March 13th each year.
“At the frontlines, the fighting zones and our borders, these fearless, four-legged fighters are incredibly valuable parts of protecting America,” Trump said in a message Thursday.

According to the White House, more than 30,000 “dedicated working dogs” with 1,600 working dogs actively serving, provide frontline support to U.S. service members.
These warriors are trained to detect explosives and drugs and assist in search and rescue operations.
Famous military work dogs include Conan, a dog from the Army Special Operations Unit. This is 50 combat veterans named after late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien, who helped track Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi when he was murdered in Syria in October 2019. Conan was injured on the mission, but he recovered completely.

At the White House in 2019, Trump gave Conan a medal and plaque, who was assigned to the operational detachment of the 1st Special Forces. Dogo was later adopted by his previous handler and died in 2023.

The White House guardian and the most decorated K-9 hurricane in US history passed away in February after more than a decade on the Secret Service.
16-year-old Belgian Marnoy received the Homeland Security Secretary’s Award for his praised service award, a well-known service medal and a courage award for the Secretary of Homeland Security Award after defeating an intruder who violated the White House Gate in 2014.
According to the New York Times, President Barack Obama and former President Michelle Obama were watching the film at the White House Theatre just a yard away.

In 2022, the Hurricane was one of three dogs that became the first recipient of the famous service medal animal of War & Peace on Capitol Hill.
He was awarded the award for helping to lay the Philippine communications line with Yorkshire Terrier and the WWII Army Air Corps veteran Smokey, and Feco, the Coast Guard explosive detection dog, was Hungarian Vizsla, who had conducted over 365 bomb searches, according to the record book.

Trump also nodded to Cairo, a veteran Seal Team 6 operator who played a key role in the May 2011 attack that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, and Marine veteran Rex, who “saved countless lives by detecting explosives in combat in Iraq.”
German Shepherd served alongside the Legion Cpl. Megan Rayleigh is a heroic service with a dog, depicted in the name of the 2017 film.

“We remember falling, so we thank all the brave veterans of the K-9 Legion who protected our Americans and our way of life, and who protected us in the name of our human best friend,” Trump said Thursday.
