The suspect is charged with allegedly killing a man he was dating with his ex-girlfriend.
Gonzalo Garcia Rodriguez, 24, of Salinas, is accused of killing 26-year-old Eugenio Lopez Ramirez, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.
On the night of February 23, the suspect reportedly stabbed Ramirez multiple times before escaping the scene. Police responded to the 100 block of Wilson Avenue, Oxnard, where Ramirez was found with several stab wounds.
Investigators believed Ramirez was attacked elsewhere before it collapsed near Wilson Avenue and First Street, the Ventura County star reported.
He was taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where he died of injury.
Following a two-week investigation, detectives identified Garcia Rodriguez as the main suspect. They also discovered that he had previously dated the victim’s girlfriend.
The situation leading up to the fatal attack was not released. At the time of his arrest, he had already been detained for another domestic violence incident, the DA’s office said.
On March 13, prosecutors announced that Garcia Rodriguez had been charged with first-degree murder.
He also said the victim is vulnerable, as he faces special allegations and aggravating circumstances, including the use of a deadly weapon and causing serious bodily injury.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges in his arrest Thursday. He remains in custody without bail. He is scheduled to return to court for an early disposal meeting on April 21.
