The Hong Kong man was sentenced Friday after Torrance wildfire inspector caught him trying to smuggle Eastern Box turtles.
Sai Keng Ting, 54, will be at the back of the bar for the next two years and six months.
Tin pleaded guilty in Los Angeles federal court in December, according to the U.S. Lawyer’s Office.
The original complaint alleges that Tin illegally assisted in exporting 40 Eastern Box Turtles from the US to Hong Kong. The turtles were sent in four boxes containing 8-12 turtles each and wrapped in socks. It turns out that one of the 40 turtles has passed away.
The turtle headed for “Ji Yearlong,” which is thought to be one of Tin’s aliases.
To smuggle turtles through their habit, the tin mistakenly labeled the packaging containing almonds and chocolate cookies.
The Eastern Box Turtle, a subspecies of the Common Box Turtle, is endemic to the US and Midwest Canada sections. Turtles often have colorful markings, making them precious pets in China and Hong Kong.
Turtles are protected by the International Trade Treaty of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna, an international agreement to protect fish, wildlife, or plants that are exposed to extinction and threatened or may be threatened.
Both the United States and China are part of this Agreement.
