Concerns have risen from view after one of the three eagles hatched at the pair’s nest this month disappeared from sight.
A flock of fans flocked to the popular 24-hour live feed of the Eagles’ nest, celebrating when the pair welcomed their fuzzy new arrival.
For a week, viewers fed their father Shadow and mother Jackie, looking at the seemingly healthy offspring, and described them accurately as “attachable fluff balls” on the camera’s Facebook page.
But things took a miserable turn on Friday morning. Only two grey chicks were moving through the nest overlooking Big Bear Lake.
The snow balm left behind by this week’s storm has obscured the view of the camera’s nest. But friends from Big Bear Valley, an educational nonprofit that runs webcams, confirmed Friday evening that the visible grey fuzz could be the body of one young chick.
“I know that both possibilities and uncertainty are difficult to hear,” the nonprofit wrote in its public log. “I share these feelings with you.”
On Saturday morning, more than 65,000 Eagles fans watched the show as one of their parents who woke up and ate fish on the enthusiastic chicks. The slightest bit of fuzz stuck to the immobilized object next to them swayed in the wind.
Since the live camera was set up in 2015, tens of thousands of fans have followed Jackie and Shadow’s growing Hina.
My recent birth has been disappointing for years. In 2023, the pair of eggs were eaten by Raven. Last year, a serious cold prevented another trio of eggs from hatching.
The Eagles nest-trained webcam showed only two of the eagles feeding Saturday mornings.

Eaglet’s exact fate is still uncertain, but a friend from Big Bear Valley took him to Facebook on Friday evening to dispel rumors stemming from viewers’ misunderstandings of eagle behavior.
Shadow did not step into one of his chicks, the organization wrote, and Jackie accidentally knocked the chick out of the nest, slamming a flying squirrel.
“We are nature observers. Things happen that we can’t control. We don’t know the whole situation at this point. Even when our emotions run, drama, worries and assumptions don’t change the situation or help anyone,” the organization writes. “We have the opportunity to observe the miracles of nature in all of that aspect. Get closer to those around you with patience, understanding and sincere kindness.”
