General Motors recalls more than 90,000 vehicles surrounding transmission control valve issues that could trap tires, NBC News said.
The issue affects the vehicle with a 10-speed transmission, the Safety Bureau said. Over time, transmission control valves in some vehicles can become susceptible to excessive wear, resulting in loss of pressure inside the valve, causing severe shifts.
“In rare cases, wheels can experience instant lockups,” the administration said in a recall notice, increasing the risk of crashes.
The affected models are the 2020-2021 Cadillac CT4, 2020-2021 Cadillac CT5, 2019-2020 Cadillac CT6 and 2020-2022 Chevrolet Camaro.
Of the 90,081 potentially affected vehicles, 1% is estimated to be defective, the NHTSA said.
In September, drivers of the 2021 Cadillac CT5 reported that the car’s front tires were trapped, the agency said.
GM said he had previously considered the issue. As lockups generally lasted less than 150 ms, the company determined that the vehicle lost control and was not sufficient to close the investigation, according to the Safety Bureau, after no related accidents or injuries were reported.
The investigation into the issue resumed in November 2024, with GM investigators noting that they found 115 reports of lockups, according to NHTSA.
GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Bureau has since decided to carry out a safety recall on February 27th, the Safety Bureau said.
Affected owners will be notified starting next month and will be available to get new transmission control software that detects excessive safety valve wear and prevents wheel lock-up.
