Americans like the idea of reducing the federal government, but according to the new referendum, they are not excited about how billionaire Elon Musk and the Government Efficiency (DOGE) are cutting down federal officials’ cuts.

President Donald Trump created the doge with a federal government overhaul and reduced order after reclaiming the White House in the election last November.

Trump piloted the organization by naming himself Musk, the world’s wealthiest and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX.

Doge swept federal agencies in the first two months of the Trump administration, eradicating what the White House claims to be billions of useless federal spending. Furthermore, it has had meat rifts for federal workers, resulting in massive miniaturization of employees. The Doge move attracted public attention and caused many lawsuits accordingly.

American voters said that creating Doge was a good idea, not a bad idea, not a bad idea, at a margin of 46% to 40% in the NBC News poll, which was held March 7-11 and released Sunday.

However, when asked about their feelings about Doge, 47% of respondents held negative views, and 41% said they viewed Doge from a positive perspective.

This is the same in the Reuters/IPSOS survey conducted between March 11 and 12.

At a margin of 59% to 39%, Americans questioned in the poll said they support a downsizing of the federal government.

New polls write about trouble for Democrats

However, 59% opposed the firing of tens of thousands of federal workers, 38% supported the move by the Trump administration, with a margin of 50% to 38% saying Trump and Musk cut too much federal spending.

Trump repeatedly praised Musk for his efforts at Doge during his Primetime speech, including a joint session of Congress earlier this month.

In a week ago in an interview with Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, Trump called the mask a “real patriot” that “opened many eyes.”

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, announced on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 that President Donald Trump in the Tesla model vehicle on the left in the south lawn of the White House in Washington, DC (via whimsical image of photographers Samuel Colm/Sipa/Bloomberg)

However, research shows that Americans do not have this rosy view of Musk. Only 39% of those questioned in the NBC News poll had a positive view of Musk, while 51% had a negative view.

He was 38% favored and 59% unfavourable underwater in the Reuters/Ipsos survey.

What the latest Fox News Polls shows

According to a referendum at Quinnipiac University, which took place between March 6 and 10, 60% approved the way Musk and Doge deal with federally employed workers, with only 36% approved.

“54% of voters believe Elon Musk and Doge are hurting the country, while 40% think they are helping the country,” the survey said.

A CNN poll conducted March 6-9 showed that more than six in 10 people thought Doge cuts would go too far, shutting down its important federal program.

Trump appears to be familiar with the negative reviews of Musk and Doge.

Two weeks ago, Trump told cabinet secretaries they were in charge of reducing their institutions, not musks.

In a social media post, Trump said he would use “scalpel” instead of “hatch” when creating government staffing.
